An 8 foot reproduction photograph of an African American cavalry officer flanks the right side of a series of artifact cases.

This photograph is of an unidentified African American soldier in uniform with a holstered handgun riding a horse, 1917-18. He is wearing an overseas cap, so the photograph might have been taken while he was on duty in Europe, most likely in France. It is possible that he could have been trained at Fort Des Moines in Iowa.

The image is from the Library of Congress.
