This guide describes materials available in the University of Iowa Archives,
Department of Special Collections, that pertain to historical and current university budgets, financial data, and salary information. RG numbers refer to the described collection’s record group number.

Annual Salary Analysis and Departmental Salary Data . The ASA covers the years 1934-1973; it was renamed DSD in 1973 and covers the years 1973-1992. Both sets of data list University faculty and staff positions but exclude names of employees. That information may be found in Internal Allocations, noted below. The ASA/DSD form part of the Records of the University Business Office (RG 25.0001.001).
Current budget information. The Finance and Operations organization of the University of Iowa maintains current and recent budget information online. Annual financial reports, bond reports, and other data are provided.
Financial Report. Issued annually by the University’s treasurer, the audited Financial Report presents the financial position and results of operations of the University of Iowa, including assets, liabilities, operating revenues, expenses, and cash flow statements. The Archives’ holdings date from 1915 to the present. Call no. LD2553 .A3.
Internal Allocations. Also known as the “budget books,” the Internal Allocations list salary and departmental budget information as compiled by the University’s business office. The volumes cover 1917 to the present and are arranged by fiscal year. Volumes beginning with the 1927 edition include indexes to individuals and departments. RG 25.0001.001.
Manuscript File Collection on Early University History. Documentation of the financial activity of the University in its earliest years, 1855 to about 1920, is included in folders labeled “Business and Finance,” or “B & F.” RG 01.0001.001.
Papers of D.C. (“Sprie”) Spriestersbach. Spriestersbach was dean of the UI Graduate College for 22 years, beginning in 1965. His papers include UI business reports and summaries of gifts and grants received by the UI, 1860-1952; also UI budget papers, including grant information, 1964-1990. RG 99.0255.
Publications. University-produced publications often include references to budget activity. Titles of over 200 such publications may be searched in the University Serials and Journals Collection (RG 01.0009.002).
Records of the Iowa State Board of Regents. Minutes of the Regents and its predecessor boards (the State University of Iowa Board of Regents, 1847-1909; the Iowa State Board of Education, 1909-1954; the state Board of Regents, 1954- ) include references to draft and approved budget information. The Archives maintains minutes, 1847-1982, and records of the Regents’ Finance Committee, 1937-1966. RG 04.0001.001 and RG 04.0002.001.
