This guide describes materials available in the University of Iowa Archives, Department of Special Collections, that pertain to University course offerings and course descriptions. RG numbers refer to the described collection’s record group number.

Areas of Study at Iowa. Published by the Office of Admissions in cooperation with the Office of the Registrar, this publication outlines majors, minors, certificate programs, and such related information as the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and the Advance Placement Program (APP). RG 24.0001.001 and LD2562.U56.
General catalogs. Published since 1855, the first year of classes at the University, the catalogs list course titles and descriptions by department for each of the University’s colleges. The catalogs also provide detailed information about majors, minors, and certificate programs. Current and some previous editions of the general catalog are also available online courtesy of the Office of the Registrar. RG 01.0008.001.
Schedule of Courses. Prepared by the Office of the Registrar since 1894, the Schedule in many of its editions includes information about class meeting times, locations, and instructors or professors. The Archives maintains a nearly-complete set, with current and recent course information available online. RG 24.0001.001.
Guide to Courses. The Guide includes information similar to that contained in the Schedule, except that it also includes course descriptions. The Archives maintains the Guide editions of 1987-2001. CLAS Bulletin. The Bulletin, published by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, includes undergraduate course descriptions for the University’s largest college. The Archives maintains the Bulletin editions of 1990-2002 in the Archives cataloged serials section.
Degrees Granted, Summary of. A statistical summary of all degrees conferred by the University of Iowa since 1847, listed by type of degree and including discontinued curricula. The list is updated annually by the Office of the Registrar on its University of Iowa Statistics web page, which is linked here.
Publications. University-produced publications often include references to specific courses and curricular activity. Titles of over 200 such publications may be searched in the University Serials and Journals Collection (RG 01.0009.0002).
