This guide describes materials available in the University of Iowa Archives, Department of Special Collections, that pertain to enrollment and student body demography. RG numbers refer to the described collection’s record group number.

A Profile of Students Enrolled. Prepared for each semester by the Office of the Registrar since 1965, the Profile includes enrollment statistics based on college, geographic origin, gender, and, beginning in 1978, ethnicity. Current and most previous editions of the Profile are available online. RG 24.0001.001.

Biennial Report of the State of Iowa Board of Education. Many of the reports include statistics about student body geographical origins, religious preferences, parents’ occupations and other data. The reports, titled as Biennial Report of the State of Iowa Board of Regents from 1954 forward, span 1910-1976 and are part of the Records of the State of Iowa Board of Education and Board of Regents (RG 04.0002.001).

Census Enrollment reports, 1856-1965. These online charts document University enrollment for the following years: 1856-1942, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Information is from the Office of the Registrar and the general course catalog; the charts are provided online by the University Archives.

Census Enrollment reports, 1963-present. An online resource maintained by the Office of the Registrar. The reports include census enrollment information for each semester from 1963 to the present.

Degrees Granted, Summary of. A statistical summary of all degrees conferred by the University of Iowa since 1847, listed by type of degree and including discontinued curricula. The list is updated annually by the Office of the Registrar on its University of Iowa Statistics web page, which is linked here.

General catalogs. Published since 1855, the first year of classes at the University, the catalogs irregularly list enrollment figures for each of the University’s colleges as well as total figures for resident and non-resident registration. Current and some previous editions of the general catalog are also available online. RG 01.0008.001.

Publications. University-produced publications often include references to enrollment trends. Titles of over 200 such publications may be searched in the University Serials and Journals Collection (RG 01.0009.002).

Records of the Dept. of Religious Studies. Data on the religious preferences of University of Iowa students were gathered irregularly during the early and mid-twentieth century by the Department (formerly School of Religion) and may be found in series VI (“student enrollment”) of the collection. RG 06.0032.001.

Records of International Programs. Includes foreign student population statistics, 1949-1972; foreign student data summaries, 1977-1998; annual reports; and other data pertaining to international student enrollment. RG 23.0006.001.

Subject Vertical Files. The Archives’ subject vertical files include information about enrollment data under the ‘Registrar’ category. The data cover all time periods in the University’s history, beginning with the first session of classes in 1855. RG 01.0015.001
