Biographical Note

Frank Aydelotte (1880-1956), was president of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania from 1921 to 1940. During his presidency, Frank modeled Swarthmore College after Oxford University, his alma mater, along with the Hicksite Quaker values long held by the college.  Frank was awarded 14 honorary degrees between 1923 and 1949, including the LL.D. from the University of Iowa in 1941.  He served as director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, 1940-1947.  Some correspondence about the Institute is included in the William O. Aydelotte papers, Frank's son .  Frank Aydelotte was chairman of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 1925-1950, and he served on the American and British Commission on Palestine in 1946.
