Rochelle Holt Dubois was born in Chicago in 1946 of Russian-Scottish-Polish parents. She started writing poetry at the age of thirteen, and eventually included prose in her writings. She received a B.A. from the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, in 1967; an M.F.A. in the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1970; and a Ph.D. from Columbia Pacific University in 1980. Her first book of poetry, To Make a Bear Dance, was published in 1970 in Iowa City. With D.H. Stefanson, Holt was co-publisher and editor of Valhalla Literary Magazine through Ragnarok Press, which received three Coordinating Council Literary Magazine grants. A protege of Anaiis Nin, she has been widely published, publishing a book annually since 1970. Her joint publication with Virginia Love Long in 1985, Letters of Human Nature, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in the small press prose division. Broad in her interests, she has been a painter, dancer, letterpress printer, sculptor, and educator, as well as poet and writer of prose.
