Scope and Contents

This collection was created by amalgamating two small sheet music collections.  As these materials were received and processed at different times, under different conditions, they have been maintained as two separate series, each with its own organizational scheme.

Series I contains sheet music from the Kenneth J. Oberembt collection, which includes work from two distinct genres. Eighteen of the approximately 150 examples in the collection pertain to the American South, while the rest focus upon America's involvement in World War I.

Series II contains sheet music from the Sylvia Maibaum collection, which consists of many songs from theater and film from music from the 1910s to the 1960s, as well as popular music from the same period, including 8 pieces of music in Hebrew or Yiddish.

Related Materials

In addition to the Sheet Music Collection, the University of Iowa Libraries is also home to the Ada Holding Miller Sheet Music Collection, which contains nearly 200 pieces of American sheet music and the Dessa Manion Music Collection , which includes transcripts of popular songs and folksongs as well as some examples of popular sheet music. More information about American music can be found at Traveling Culture: Circuit Chautauqua in the Twentieth Century.
